Simple Tips for Prolonging Flower Lifespan
Tip #1: Replenish and Change Water Regularly
Frequently replenishing the water in your vase and changing it entirely every 2-3 days helps keep your flowers hydrated and fresh.
Tip #2: Trim the Stems
Before placing your flowers in a vase and each time you change the water, trim at least half an inch off the stems. This enables better water absorption, extending the life of your flowers.
Tip #3: Keep Flowers Away from Heat and Bright Light
Avoid placing your flowers near sources of heat and direct sunlight, as this can cause them to wilt prematurely.
Tip #4: Separate from Ripening Fruit and Vegetables
To prevent premature aging, keep your flowers away from ripening fruit and vegetables, especially bananas and apples, which release ethylene gas.
Tip #5: Thoroughly Clean Vases
After discarding your last flower arrangement, wash the vase or container thoroughly with hot soapy water, in your dishwasher, or with bleach to remove any residue that could harm future flowers.
Tip #6: Use "Flower Food"
For most flowers, using "flower food" can help extend their lifespan. You can make your own flower food by adding approximately 1 teaspoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of bleach to warm tap water, before placing your flowers in the vase. Note that some flowers, such as zinnias, sunflowers, and gladiolus, do not benefit from flower food.
Tip #7: Use Sharp Scissors
When cutting flowers, use sharp scissors or pruning shears to create clean cuts that facilitate better water uptake.
By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your fresh cut flowers and enjoy their beauty for as long as possible.
